Amid the gentle breeze over the vineyard, a lone Sugar Pine stands watch. The Miwok people called it Sumu Kaw.
My mission at Askew is to deliver you a wine that tells you a story about the place it comes from in its purest, unadulterated form. Nebbiolo was planted at this site in 1997 by Dave and Sheila Bush who have been keeping this vineyard for over 20 years. Many winemakers know that Nebbiolo isn’t an easy grape to grow, nor make wine from… it requires patience, something that many of us are not used to in today’s world. Think of what has happened in the time that this wine was just in a barrel!
I learned so much from this project, but most of all– I learned patience! The barrel ageing softens the tannins, and concentrates the flavor. At only .8 tons to the acre in this crop, I’m so happy how this initial 2018 vintage turned out!! I took a truly hands-off approach, letting the wine tell its own story… only simply topping the barrel occasionally (by the way, I used 2 neutral Gamba barrels, a nod to the home of Nebbiolo in Piedmonte).
I believe this wine can age well for the next 5 years, but can also be enjoyed now as a fresher version of itself.
